While Lord Mayor Campbell Newman has been going out of his way to tell rate payers to get on their bikes to beat Brisbane traffic and save bucks, he’s not alone.
Former property operative turned-retailer Harry Samson has launched some aggressive marketing moves over the past few weeks to grab his share of the bike market through his NOPE electric bike business, which we wrote about in August.
Those frequenting the Brisbane CBD in the past week would have seen a precession of electric bikes weaving their way around the golden triangle and not even raising a swet, a change from the hordes of Lycra-wearing riders.
The final TVC for NOPE Electric Bikes in all it’s glory Well done to Clint and Benn as Gary and Barry – Awesome work from Jeff and the team @ Pixelframe for the very polished production work.

Bike with Grunt – As seen on bmag Oct 05 2010
As the campaign to swap four wheels for two gains momentum, Brisbane’s leading environmental journalist Graham Readfearn takes an electric bike for a test drive, no sweat…
Within smelling distance, just a couple of metres ahead, is the slightly sweaty rocking bum of a cyclist encased in customary tight-fitting shorts. The young bicycle commuter is courageously ascending one of Brisbane’s many killer hills. As we near the top of the hill, each turn of the pedals is accompanied by muffled grunts and gasps for air. The incline is beginning to take its toll. I’m also on a bicycle but my arrival at the summit is smugly grunt-free. This is not because I’m Brisbane’s answer to Lance Armstrong but because I’ve cheated. Underneath my forgiving padded seat is a 36 volt lithium polymer battery and hidden in the hub of my rear wheel is an electric motor.
To make my new electric bike go, loaned for this story from NOPE, I have a choice. I can set the onboard computer to “pedal assist”, where the motor will only help me along if I do my share, or I can go all out electric. In the latter mode, the experience is genuinely odd but ultimately fun.
Forward motion of any kind these days usually comes with the sound of a fossil fuel-hungry internal combustion engine or lashings of human sweat and, yes, sometimes grunting. So trundling along with only a twist of the wrist and a faint whirr of an electric motor takes a bit of getting used to and does attract some puzzled looks from pedestrians (especially if you fail to resist the urge to shout “wheee” as you go). Going forward is as simple as turning the key and opening the throttle incorporated into the handlebar. The small screen tells you how far you’ve gone, how much battery charge is left and how fast you’re going. In our bmag trial (with my admittedly tiny 55kg frame on board), the bike got up to 30km/h on a flat road with no pedalling and even faster with help from the bike’s seven gears.
